Titanic Interest items belonging to Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Go...
Hammer
£160
Titanic Interest items belonging to Sir Cosmo Edmund Duff-Gordon, including a cased pair of Elliott Brothers binoculars, retailed by J. Graham and Co of Inverness, and a framed illustrated menu. Provenance: Laidlaw Auctioneers & Valuers Lot 17 8th April 2017.
The 5th Baronet of Halkin, Sir Cosmo Duff-Gordon was a noted sportsman and represented Great Britain at the 1906 Intercalated Games, where he won silver in the team epee event. He is perhaps best known for the circumstances in which he survived the sinking of RMS Titanic in 1912, along with his wife and her secretary. Criticism after the disaster claimed Sir Cosmo boarded the lifeboat in violation of the 'women and children first' policy, and once the lifeboat was afloat, bribed its crew not to return to rescue survivors struggling in the water. This was a sequence of events which Sir Cosmo vehemently denied, and for which he was cleared by the subsequent British Board of Trade's inquiry.
