BECKE EDMUND. BIBLE. (The Byble, That is to Say Al the Holy Scripture). Lacks title & early leaves, commences at AAiii (in "Principal Matters"), concludes after 1st leaf of The Table at the conclusion of the New Testament, some other leaves lacking & final leaves detached. Black letter in double column with woodcut initials & wood eng. illus. to the New Testament. No general title or title to the 2nd part but with individual titles to "The Thirde Part", "Apocripha" & "New Testamente". Quarto. Old calf covered brds., lower brd. det. but present. Mixed cond. internally, some leaves with much browning & stng., others good. Close cropping to upper margin with some loss of headings. Scribblings & annotations. 1551. The fourth edition of the 'Matthew Bible` version, revised by Richard Taverner, further revised by Edmund Becke,  who edited the whole. First published in 1537, this version "welds together the best work of Tyndale and Coverdale, [and] is generally considered to be the real primary version of our English Bible" (Herbert). The "Bug Bible" (Psalm 91:5). Sold not subject to return.
