Documents & Ephemera - Hope-Johnstone of Annandale. Westmeath Hunt, Ireland & WWI exemption from active service case papers. 1916-17. An interesting archive relating to Evelyn Wentworth Hope - Johnstone of Knockdrin Castle, Mullingar & Raehills, Lockerbie. As Master of the Westmeath Hunt (1913-24) & the case for him being exempt from military service, including fine autograph letter from General Sir Bryan Thomas Mahon, C-in Chief of British Army in Ireland & later Senator of the Irish Free State, correspondence form Mullingar Rural Council & others to his importance to the Hunt & the army's acquisition of remount horses, medical report, War Office correspondence, several letters from him at Knockdrin Castle, letters from Henderson of the Annandale Estate Office, Moffat, etc. (It would appear initially he was granted exemption but then the army changed its mind which resulted in this long drawn out case & the attempt to get him an "at home" position in the army including The ASC Remounts Service, which was responsible for the provisioning of horses & mules, even though medical evidence in the archives states he was unfit for military service).
