'The Process of Thought'
Original pen and ink drawing on paper for the painting with the same title, the original pen drawing for 'The Sick Person' appears verso, 37.5cm x 27.5cm, unframed.  ARR

This, and the following drawings/designs, date from the mid to late 1930s when Gear took his travelling scholarship to Italy, Greece, the Balkans and Paris, where he studied at the Académie Colarossi under Fernand Léger.

This body of work culminated in one of the first surrealist exhibitions to be held in Britain under the banner of the 'New Era Group'.  The exhibition was held at the Gladstone's Land Galleries, Royal Mile, Edinburgh in 1939 and also included the artists, Hugh Crawford, Joseph Forrester, Tom Pow and Rendall Wells.

The collection highlights the turning point in the decade of Gear's career as he moved from the figurative towards total abstraction.
