Documents - Heywood Walter Seton-Karr (1859-1938), British Soldier, Explorer & Amateur Archaeologist. Correspondence 1923-25 with five letters from him (four manuscript & signed, Egypt & Hammersmith, London) & other letters from family members. (27 items). The British soldier, explorer & amateur archaeologist Heywood Seton-Karr was particularly interested in stone tool technologies. He located "lost" flint mines in the eastern Egyptian desert, excavating extensive extraction & processing sites near Fayum & at Wadi El-Sheikh with the help of H. E. Johnson & the Arabs in 1896. Seton-Karr's discoveries in Somaliland were the first evidence of Stone Age man in tropical Africa &, in Evan's view, tended to prove the unity of races in Asia, Europe & Africa in palaeolithic times. For his contributions to archaeology, Seton-Karr was awarded the Galileo gold medal by the University of Florence.
