Documents - Ephemera - Cumberland - John Cowans, Cowans, Sheldon & Co. Small archive of his executors documents, correspondence, including John Cowan's signed original will dated 8th May 1867, together with two letters from him, one on St. Nicholas Iron & Engine Works headed paper. Two letters from Edward Sheldon (1875). Letters & balance sheets from William Putnam, manager & partner of the Darlington Forge Company, owned by Cowans Sheldon, also 1857 letter from Alfred Hollis on his retirement from Darlington Forge to Cowans, numerous papers & schedules, transfer share certificates relating to John Cowans' investments, legal papers, etc. Fascinating local archive. (Cowans Sheldon was founded by John Cowans & Edward Sheldon, both of Newcastle upon Tyne & ex-apprentices of Robt. Stephenson & Co. in 1846. They opened at Woodbank Ironworks (s. of Upperby) on the Petteril in 1847. Expansion led to the purchase of their present site in 1857 & removal to it in 1869. In June 1961 they merged with Clyde Crane & Booth & in August 1968 they merged with Clarke Chapman & Co. Ltd. as part of its Crane & Bridge Division).
